Voyles Family Dental is welcoming new patients. Please download and complete the new patient form and call our office to schedule your first appointment.
What types of fillings do you use?
We use a white, composite material, and tint it to the color of your tooth.
Do you use digital x-rays?
Yes, we use digital x-rays. The picture is available in our computer system instantly; and they involve virtually no radiation, which is safer for you!
What are dental sealants, and what age are they applied?
Dental Sealants are a white, flowable material that covers the pits and grooves of your molars. These are used to prevent cavities and decay that most commonly occur in those crevices. Sealants can be applied to a child’s permanent molars around the age of 6 or 7; although they can be applied earlier if the child is a candidate.
What is oral sedation, and will I be able to drive home?
Oral Sedation is a pill, prescribed by your dentist, that you will take 30 minutes prior to your appointment. The pill will help to calm your anxieties, and will make you drowsy enough that you might fall asleep during the procedure. So bring your spouse or call a friend, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.
How often should I go to the dentist?
It is recommended that you visit your dentist every 6 months (every 3-4 months if you have gum disease). Along with preventative care and cleaning, your dentist will perform an oral health assessment, looking for clues that may indicate other health issues.
What are plaque and tartar, and why do they need to be removed at a dental office?
Plaque is a film or “layer” of bacteria that grows on your teeth. Most of it can be removed with daily brushing; but some of it can’t easily be reached, and will remain on your teeth. When it stays for too long, it will calcify and become tartar. Plaque is soft, but tartar is hard and requires dental instruments to be removed. If the tartar stays long enough, it migrates below the gum and causes gingivitis; which can lead to bone loss and periodontal disease.
What is periodontal disease?
Bleeding gums (gingivitis) is the first warning sign of periodontal disease (perio “around” and dontal “tooth”). This happens when tartar migrates below the gums and destroys the bone around the tooth. Periodontal disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes and other systemic problems.
What is the difference between teeth whitening products at the store compared to those provided by a dentist?
Over the counter teeth whitening products are a much lower concentration than the gel you will get from your dentist. Along with the gel, we provide a custom mold that will fit your mouth perfectly. This helps to reach the optimal amount of surface area on your teeth.
Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual one?
Yes. An electric toothbrush is more effective at cleaning plaque, although it is not a replacement for flossing.
